Faith Alone or Faithfulness Alone? | Romans 3:1-31 | Pastor Scott Lackey

Welcome to Romans Part 4
This series explores the book of Romans through a familial lens, seeing Paul not as a distant theologian but as a pastor helping a divided church live as one family in Christ. In Rome, tensions existed between the “weak” (primarily Jewish Christians who continued observing the Torah) and the “strong” (primarily Gentile Christians who lived with greater freedom and social privilege). Each group judged the other. Rather than reading Romans merely as a theological textbook or a roadmap to heaven, this series frames the letter as a pastoral appeal for unity, where every passage speaks to the weak, the strong, or both. Ultimately, Romans invites us to move beyond division and rediscover what it means to live together as God’s family.

At New Story Church, our nine-week Family Habits series invited our church family to intentionally practice the way of Jesus together. Each week we explored a different spiritual habit—community, sabbath, fasting, prayer, witnessing, generosity, Scripture reading, solitude, and service—seeing them not as religious obligations, but as rhythms that shape us into Christ’s likeness. We looked at how these practices were modeled by Jesus and how they form us over time through everyday faithfulness. More than information, this series was about transformation—learning to order our lives around habits that make space for God to work in us. Our hope is that these family habits become a shared way of life as we seek to imitate Jesus and embody His love in our homes, church, and city.
