Welcome someone who is weak in faith, but not in order to have disputes on difficult points. - Romans 14:1
We, the “strong” ones, should bear with the frailty of the “weak,” and not please ourselves. - Romans 15:1
But it can’t be the case that God’s word has failed! Not all who are from Israel, you see, are in fact Israel. - Romans 9:6
Paul is guiding the “weak” to grasp God’s mercy, membership and mission.
“Jacob I loved, but Esau I Hated”
So show your love for the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. - Deuteronomy 10:19
When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not go over it again; it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow. - Deuteronomy 24:21
I will make you a light to the nations, so you can bring my deliverance to the remote regions of the earth.” - Isaiah 49:6
because if you profess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Why? Because covenant membership comes by believing with the heart, and salvation comes by professing with the mouth. The Bible says, you see, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, since the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich towards all who call upon him. “All who call upon the name of the Lord,” you see, “will be saved.” - Romans 10:9-13
“God has mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and he hardens whom he chooses to harden.”
They were broken off because of unbelief - Romans 11:20B
My dear brothers and sisters, you mustn’t get the wrong idea and think too much of yourselves. That is why I don’t want you to remain in ignorance of this mystery: a hardening has come for a time upon Israel, until the fullness of the nations comes in. - Romans 11:25
The Potter and Clay analogy
The Lord said to Jeremiah: “Go down at once to the potter’s house. I will speak to you further there.” So I went down to the potter’s house and found him working at his wheel. Now and then there would be something wrong with the pot he was molding from the clay with his hands. So he would rework the clay into another kind of pot as he saw fit. - Jeremiah 18:1-4
There are times, Jeremiah, when I threaten to uproot, tear down, and destroy a nation or kingdom. But if that nation I threatened stops doing wrong, I will cancel the destruction I intended to do to it. And there are times when I promise to build up and establish a nation or kingdom. But if that nation does what displeases me and does not obey me, then I will cancel the good I promised to do to it. - Jeremiah 18:7-10
“Objects of wrath” or “Vessels of Wrath”
Actually, that’s how all of us used to behave, conditioned by physical desires. We used to do what our flesh and our minds were urging us to do. What was the result? We too were subject to wrath in our natural state, just like everyone else. But when it comes to mercy, God is rich! He had such great love for us that he took us at the very point where we were dead through our offenses, and made us alive together with the Messiah (yes, you are saved by sheer grace!). - Ephesians 2:3-5
Paul is guiding the “weak” to grasp God’s mercy, membership and mission.
He says to Moses, you see, “I will have mercy on those on whom I will have mercy, and I will pity those I will pity.” - Romans 9:15
Nor is it the case that all the children count as “seed of Abraham.” No: “in Isaac shall your seed be named.” That means that it isn’t the flesh-and-blood children who are God’s children; rather, it is the children of the promise who will be calculated as “seed.” - Romans 9:7-8
This is what he says in Hosea, I will call “not my people” “my people” and “not beloved” I will call “beloved.” And in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” there they will be called “sons of the living God.” - Romans 9:25-26
What then shall we say? That the nations, who were not aspiring towards covenant membership, have obtained covenant membership, but it is a covenant membership based on faith. - Romans 9:30
May the God of patience and encouragement grant you to come to a common mind among yourselves, in accordance with the Messiah, Jesus, so that, with one mind and one mouth, you may glorify the God and father of our Lord Jesus the Messiah. - Romans 15:5-6
That’s why I’m eager to announce the good news to you, too, in Rome. I’m not ashamed of the good news; it’s God’s power, bringing salvation to everyone who believes—to the Jew first, and also, equally, to the Greek. - Romans 1:15-16

“I have given them the glory which you have given to me, so that they may be one, just as we are one. I in them, and you in me; yes, they must be completely one, so that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them just as you loved me. - John 17:22-23
1. Free will reveals God's love and desires
who wants all people to be saved and to come to know the truth. - 1 Timothy 2:4
The Lord is not delaying his promise, in the way that some think of delay, but he is very patient towards you. He does not want anyone to be destroyed. Rather, he wants everyone to arrive at repentance. - 2nd Peter 3:9
But in respect of Israel he says, All day long I have stretched out my hands to a disbelieving and disagreeable people. - Romans 10:21
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. - Ephesians 4:30
I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. - Galatians 2:20
2. Free will encourages the power of prayer
Then he said to me, “Do not be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart on understanding this and on humbling yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to your words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia was withstanding me for twenty-one days; then behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia. - Daniel 10:12-13
In those days Hezekiah was stricken with a terminal illness. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz visited him and told him, “This is what the Lord has said, ‘Give your household instructions, for you are about to die; you will not get well.’” He turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, “Please, Lord. Remember how I have served you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion, and how I have carried out your will.” Then Hezekiah wept bitterly. - 2 Kings 20:1-3
Isaiah had not yet left the middle courtyard when the Lord’s message came to him, “Go back and tell Hezekiah, the leader of my people: ‘This is what the Lord God of your ancestor David has said: “I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Look, I will heal you. The day after tomorrow you will go up to the Lord’s temple. I will add fifteen years to your life and rescue you and this city from the king of Assyria. - 2nd Kings 20:4-6A
3. Free will better rationalizes the problem of evil
This is the message which we have heard from him, and announce to you: God is light, and there is no darkness at all in him. - 1 John 1:5
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. - James 1:13
He is the shining reflection of God’s own glory, the precise expression of his own very being; - Hebrews 1:3A
He is the image of God, the invisible one, the firstborn of all creation. - Colossians 1:15
4. Free will challenges humans to embrace responsibility for their actions
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to come after me, they must give themselves up, and pick up their cross, and follow me. Yes: if someone wants to save their life, they must lose it; and if anyone loses their life for my sake they will find it. - Matthew 16:24-25
“I’m giving you a new commandment, and it’s this: love one another! Just as I have loved you, so you must love one another. - John 13:34
